Diabetic Eye Exams & Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes effects blood vessels throughout your body, including your eyes. Every diabetic should undergo, at minimum, a yearly dilated eye exam by an eye MD. Diabetic eye exams monitor for development of diabetic retinopathy, a disease that results in bleeding and swelling inside the eye. A thorough exam and sophisticated diagnostic equipment is necessary to fully evaluate for this condition.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is a condition that involves slow destruction of the central retina (nervous tissue that lines the back of the eye). This results in loss of central vision. Early diagnosis, close follow up and treatment by a trained medical professional is important in management of this disease.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a slow painless peripheral vision loss, most commonly due to elevated intra-ocular pressure. Oftentimes glaucoma is genetic and runs through families. Glaucoma can be a severe and vision threatening disease that requires close follow up with a trained professional.
Flashes & Floaters
Floaters (small specks or cobwebs) and flashes of light in your vision can be a sign of a vision threatening condition known as retinal detachment. Should you notice floaters or flashes contact an eye MD for a thorough dilated exam to rule out the possibility of a vision threatening disease.
Styes & Chalazia
Styes and chalazia are chronic inflammation and infections of the eyelid. Left untreated these can progress to more severe eye infections. Schedule a consultation to discuss your medical and surgical treatment options.
Plaquenil Eye Exam
If you are on Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) or chloroquine therapy a dilated eye exam is necessary. In certain individuals chronic Plaquenil use can result in permanent vision loss and thus must be closely monitored by a qualified professional.
Corneal Abrasion
A corneal abrasion is a highly painful ‘scratch’ or cut on the clear window of the eye, the cornea. Without proper treatment this condition can proceed to infection and result in permanent vision decline. Please schedule a consult with our trained corneal specialist, if you have the symptoms of a corneal abrasion.
Pink Eye & Other Eye Infections
Pink eye or other conjunctivitis can be very painful and highly contagious eye infection. Our eye care professional can help mitigate symptoms and counsel you through this disease.
Pterygium & Pinguecula
Pterygium and pinguecula are fleshy growths of the conjunctiva (membrane the covers the white part of the eye). This can lead to vision changes, eye discomfort, and scarring or warpage of the surface of the eye. If you suspect you have a pterygium it is important to seek evaluation by a qualified physician.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is bulging and thinning of the cornea, the clear window of the eye. This can result in severe astigmatism and significant vision decline. If you suspect or have been diagnosed with keratoconus it is important to establish care with a cornea specialist.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is chronic inflammation or irritation of the eyelids that causes itching, redness, and crusting of the eyes. This can progress to dry eye, chalazia and stye. Our corneal specialist can discuss the most up-to-date medical and laser therapy for blepharitis.
